The Beginning Of Messina Football
The sporting tradition of Messina’s main football club began on 1 December 1900, with the foundation of the Messina Football Club. It was established by English members, including first president Walter F. Becker, and Messinese citizens such as Alfredo Marangolo.
In its early years, the club competed locally and regionally, laying the foundations for one of Sicily’s historic football identities.
2 Whitaker Challenge Cups
Won in 1905 and 1906, marking an early era of competitive success for Messina football.

The Various Re-Foundations
The club’s history is marked by mergers and rebirths. The main milestones that led to today’s A.C.R. Messina are:
-
Messina Football Club 1900–1924 The original club.
-
Associazione Calcio Messina 1928–1940 The first true “AC Messina,” which reached Serie B in the 1930s before disappearing during the war.
-
Associazioni Calcio Riunite Messina 1947–1993 The historic “ACR Messina,” born from the merger between AC Messina and US Giostra. This was the club’s first historic promotion to Serie A in 1963.
-
Football Club Messina Peloro 1997–2009 After ACR’s bankruptcy, this new entity led the club back to Serie A in the 2000s, achieving its best-ever finish of 7th place.
-
Associazione Calcio Rinascita Messina 2009–2017 Formed after the bankruptcy of FC Messina Peloro.
-
Associazioni Calcio Riunite Messina 2017–Present The current club, which restarted from Serie D after the previous management was excluded from professional competitions.
